EXCERPT FROM THE STUDY

The National Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) (2018) defines CAM as “a group of various medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently considered to be an aspect of conventional medicine.” Complementary interventions are healthcare approaches used in conjunction with conventional interventions, whereas alternative medicines are used in place of conventional medicine.

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is now in common use globally and varies among populations. Reports on the prevalence of CAM use vary greatly in both developed and developing countries.

Nurses’ perceptions of CAM affects where and how CAM is used, regardless of its benefits for patients is of utmost importance (Trail-Mahan et al., 2018) . CAM is integral to managing pain and monitoring patients for adverse effects, and to properly use CAM therapies, nurses must have the resources and educational opportunities to broaden their understanding of CAM and how it can benefit patients. Nurses’ patient-centered care allows them to play a key role in promoting the use of adjunctive CAM therapies; however, nurses must have adequate knowledge about CAMs to decrease the risk of adverse effects and to use them effectively (Chang & Chang, 2015; Vitale, 2017).
